Living Beyond Breast Cancer
Mission. Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC), founded in 1991, is a national nonprofit education and support organization serving women and families affected by breast cancer. LBBC’s mission is to empower all women affected by breast cancer to live as long as possible with the best quality of life.
Programs and Service
Conferences. Large-scale educational conferences help women make informed choices about their health and well-being and assist their families, friends and healthcare providers. National experts share the latest technical and practical information in large sessions and in specialized, interactive workshops.
Teleconferences. Free teleconferences address medical findings from leading breast cancer conferences, give detailed information on new treatments and clinical trials and explore emotional issues. Scheduled at convenient times, LBBC teleconferences offer opportunities for participants to ask questions.
Survivors’ Helpline (888) 753-LBBC (5222). Volunteers on LBBC’s national toll-free telephone service offer peer support, information and hope in a confidential setting. A personalized matching service connects callers with women in similar circumstances.
lbbc.org. Visitors can learn about breast cancer issues, participate in message boards, read newsletters and transcripts, sign up for a free mailing list, order publications and register for events.
Newsletters. Insight, LBBC’s quarterly newsletter, delivers medical information in clear, understandable language and explores emotional issues respectfully and compassionately.
Recordings. Low-cost compact discs and audiotapes from the LBBC audio library contain presentations from experts on a wide variety of medical treatments and quality-of-life concerns.
Publications. Publications for women newly diagnosed with early-stage and advanced breast cancer, as well as the culturally sensitive books Getting Connected: African-Americans Living Beyond Breast Cancer and We Celebrate Tomorrow: Latinas Living Beyond Breast Cancer/Celebramos el Mañana: Latinas que Sobreviven el Cáncer del Seno, are distributed free to women with breast cancer and at low cost to health and social service providers.
Workshops and Trainings. Getting Connected and We Celebrate Tomorrow are used as the focal points for healthcare provider trainings aimed at increasing sensitivity toward medically underserved women and families of color. LBBC presents workshops at high-level conferences and health fairs.
Networking Programs. LBBC’s networking groups bring experts face-to-face with women and provide opportunities for women and families to interact with each other. Specialized programs focus on the needs of women diagnosed before age 45, women of color and women at high risk for developing breast cancer.
Library. LBBC maintains the Paula A. Seidman Library and Resource Center, the Philadelphia region’s only comprehensive library of books and resources on breast cancer. The center contains books, pamphlets, newsletters, magazines, audiotapes and videos on breast cancer and related topics.
