Ms. Geoghegan works closely with Komen’s new Scientific Advisory Board, lead by Dr. Eric Winer, to provide input to Komen leadership on grants strategy, educational programs and messages and public policy initiatives. Ms. Geoghegan became a breast cancer advocate when she was diagnosed with the disease 12 years ago at the age of 35. As one of the founders of the Komen Maryland Affiliate, she served as president, created a community grants program, lead education efforts and worked on statewide legislative policy efforts. After she relocated to the New York City area with her family, she was called upon to serve that Affiliate as president, when its founder and president both died within the same week. Cindy has served in advocacy initiatives for the National Cancer Institute, the Johns Hopkins Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), American Association for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and other cancer funding agencies. She has been recognized for her efforts in breast cancer advocacy on a national level by Yoplait, Kellogg’s, and BMW, and has also been recognized with a Komen Lifetime Volunteer Award. Under her leadership, the New York City Affiliate was named Komen Affiliate of the Year. Prior to her diagnosis, Cindy directed crisis communications and issues management teams at Hill & Knowlton and Fleishman-Hillard, two international public relations agencies headquartered in New York City.
